Human Resources Management and the Australian Human Resources Institute: The Profession and Its Professional Body

This article outlines the evolution of the human resources management (HRM) function in Australia between 1941 and the early 1990s. It also describes and illustrates the interrelationship between the evolution of the HRM function and the development of the institute representing practitioners of HRM. The specific contributions of the institute are summarized under the headings: mission and objects, membership, education, publications and research. The characteristics of professions and professionalism are outlined and an assessment made of the professional status of HRM in Australia.
