Staff Development Needs Analysis

A Workshop Approach

I. Trahn

Staff Development officer at the University of N.S.W.

J. McLachlan

Universities, CAE's and TAPE.

When staff development needs analyses are being planned, the possible methods are numerous. They include questionnaires/surveys, interviews, consultation of 'key' people in the organization, customer surveys, use of the Delphi Technique, problem solving (Kepner-Tregoe), organizational audits, functional audits, observation and measurement, and more.

Given the time constraints, and the avid interest and wish to contribute on the part of all staff members, the authors chose the mechanism of workshops. The experience is recounted below.
