Career Choices and Career Paths

C. Margerison

B. Smeed

Developing a successful career is becoming increasingly difficult due to the rapid changes taking place in society and the increasing competition for jobs. Large organizations are paying more attention to assessing peoples careers. A variety of means including assessment centres, psychological testing, performance appraisal, career counselling, project workshops and other means are currently in use.

The aim is not just to identify, train and promote the senior executives of tomorrow. It is to enable people to have a job in which they can use their skills to the best and learn to extend themselves to the next level. The design of a career system where people can gain the requisite experience to do their work is a complicated process. Having the right people in the right place at the right time is easy to say but very difficult to do.
